Australian High Commission launches Australia Month
Kuala Lumpur, 21 March 2009: Today, the Acting Australian High Commissioner, Mr Craig Chittick, launched “Australia Month in Malaysia” by flagging off an Australia Month branded bus. The KL Rapid bus, which operates the B103 route (Titiwangsa to Bukit Bintang via KLCC), made a special stop at Avenue K where Mr Chittick presented Australian momentos to passengers onboard the bus.
Australia Month will take place throughout April and will showcase the vibrancy and diversity of modern Australian culture and the wonderful linkages between our two countries through an eclectic array of events ranging from the performing arts to education, food and beverages, and sport. Australia Month is the centrepiece of the High Commission’s cultural program in Malaysia for 2009 and builds on the very successful MY.OZ festival in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Malaysia‘s independence in 2007.
The month-long festival will comprise:
• australia month @ klpac - a joint collaboration between the Australian High Commission and the KL Performing Arts Centre. The festival includes theatre performances in “The Diary of a Madman”, Australian songs, music and poetry in “Sinfonietta … in the Style of Down Under”, and Indian dance in “Rasa Unmasked”. The festival also aims to leave a legacy of education in the performing arts, with the “Short+Sweet” dance and theatre workshops and a Shakespearean workshop called “From the Page and onto the Floor”. The Australian High Commission will distribute 400 tickets to Kuala Lumpur schools to attend the “From the Page and onto the Floor” showcase.
• Taste Australia - a month-long promotion of Australian food and wine at the Westin Kuala Lumpur. The Westin’s restaurants will present special menus which showcase Australian beef, seafood, cheese and desserts. The Westin’s sports bar, Splash, will feature Australian pies – the perfect accompaniment to live football!
• The Great Aussie BBQ – a special dinner event, featuring Australian food and wine served in a typically Australian way, cooked and eaten outdoors with great music and good company.
• Australian Rules Competition – a football competition between the Malaysian Warriors, Singapore Wombats and the Australian Army team, to be held on Anzac Day, 25 April.
• The 10th Anniversary Celebrations of Curtin University in Miri, Sarawak. Curtin University will celebrate ten years in Malaysia with an open day, an awards and scholarship ceremony and a special celebration dinner.
• The annual Australian Alumni Hunteroos – a treasure hunt on 25 April, starting in Kuala Lumpur City Centre and ending at Equine Park, Seri Kembangan. The hunt is open to all Australian alumni and there are prizes for the winners.
