KUALA LUMPUR 5 February 2009 - 17 Malaysian scholars and professionals have been selected as recipients of scholarships under the Australian Endeavour Awards program (11 recipients) and the Malaysia Australia Colombo Plan Commemorative (MACC) Scholarships program (six recipients).

The recipients will travel to Australia this year to pursue undergraduate and post-graduate studies and professional development across a broad range of disciplines at Australian universities and research centres. The total value of the scholarships for this year’s recipients is approximately RM 2 million.

Speaking at a reception to present the recipients with their scholarships, the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, H.E. Ms Penny Williams, said that education has always been at the heart of the Australia-Malaysia bilateral relationship.

“Through education Malaysians and Australians have come to know each other better and have created binding ties between our two communities. The Endeavour Awards and the Malaysia Australia Colombo Plan Commemorative Scholarships, which build on the spirit of the original Colombo Plan, are Australia’s contribution to continuing that wonderful relationship,” said Williams.

Since its inception in Australia in 2006, the Endeavour Awards program has provided two-way education exchange for more than 30 Australian and Malaysian students. This year, in addition to the 11 Malaysian recipients of Endeavour Awards, four Australian recipients of the Awards will pursue further studies at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the International Islamic University Malaysia.

Dr Munirah Ghazali, who received an Endeavour Award, will undertake postdoctoral research at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne focusing on the development of effective curriculum for the teaching of Maths in primary schools. Mr Anpalagan Sockalingam has received an Endeavour Executive Award to undertake four months of professional development in the application of nanotechnology in environmental engineering at Murdoch University in Perth.

The MACC Scholarship program is spearheaded by the Malaysian Australian Alumni Council, an umbrella organisation for Australian university alumni in Malaysia, and IDP Education Australia, with the support of the Malaysia-Australia Foundation, the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Australian Education International and the Australia Malaysia Cultural Foundation.

This year’s recipients of MACC scholarships will pursue a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Australian universities. Mr Ivan Tan, from Shah Alam, received a partial fee waiver to study economics at the University of Queensland and Ms Melissa Chong Wai Fong received a full scholarship to pursue her Masters in Commerce at RMIT University in Melbourne.
