Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)
The Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is an invisible visa issued to you electronically. If you intend to visit Australia for tourism or a short business trip, for a period of less than three months, and you are a National of an ETA country, you are eligible to apply for an ETA. See : Am I eligible
You may apply for an ETA for tourism and multiple entry (1 year validity) business ETA through the internet at www.eta.immi.gov.au. A service charge of AUD20.00 is payable by American Express, Diners club, JCB, Visa or Mastercard for the internet service. An ETA can also be issued through your travel agent or airline. There is no application form to complete. The ETA is issued electronically upon presentation of a valid passport. No visa label will be put in your passport. On departure for Australia, airline staff can confirm through their reservation system that a valid visa for Australia is held. See : Australian Electronic Travel Authority
There is no visa application charge payable for an ETA for tourism and a multiple entry (1 year validity) business ETA. However, a visa application charge is payable for a multiple entry business ETA, valid for the life of the passport. See : Types of Visas & Application charges
Advantages of ETA
-
No forms need to be completed
-
It is FAST. The ETA requires less information than a normal visa, so the response time is very fast - and there is no visa label to stick in your passport. The whole process can be completed in a matter of minutes and, if you are applying at a travel agency, you can apply for an ETA at the same time you make your airline reservations
-
Approval comes direct from Australia
People who wish to visit Australia for a stay of more than three months or for medical reasons and Nationals of non-ETA countries who wish to visit Australia, should read the Visiting Australia page for more information.

Important – changes to ETAs from April 2008
From 21 April 2008, the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship is implementing changes to the ETA system. The department will continue to process most ETA applications instantly; however in a small number of cases, some additional processing will be required. If your ETA cannot be issued immediately, please check back in 12 hours to confirm whether your application has been successful. Please apply for your ETA as early as possible to allow sufficient time for your application to be processed.
For more information on ETA, visit the Department of Immigration and Citizenship at www.immi.gov.au
